Press Release: Port Corpus Christi Earns “StormReady Community” Recognition

Aug 02, 2017

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, USA – The Port of Corpus Christi earned “StormReady Community” recognition by the National Weather Service.  With this acknowledgment, the Port becomes the first port in Texas and by far the largest in the country to hold this distinction.

StormReady is a nationwide community preparedness program that uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle all types of severe weather—from tornadoes to tsunamis. The program encourages communities to take a new, proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations by providing emergency managers with clear-cut guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.  Currently there are 194 communities in Texas designated StormReady.

In order to become StormReady, the Port had to establish a 24-hour warning point and Emergency Operations Center, have multiple ways to receive notifications and alert the public of severe weather warnings and forecasts, create a system that monitors weather conditions locally, promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars, and develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises and pass a site-visit conducted by the National Weather Service & State Emergency Manager.

“Port Corpus Christi employees and partners take weather very seriously.  Our region is prone to severe weather throughout the year.  Through increased awareness and enhanced decision making support, we are ensuring safe and uninterrupted commerce whenever possible.  This recognition clearly shows our commitment to preparedness and the excellent work of our team,” said Danielle Hale, Manager of Emergency Management.

The StormReady recognition will be valid for three years. Please visit our national StormReady Website at www.stormready.noaa.gov to see Port of Corpus Christi Authority on our national and state map of recognized communities. The recognition will expire on July 27, 2020.
