Press Release: Port Corpus Christi Employees to Present Donation to The Ready or Not Foundation

Aug 03, 2017

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, USA – Employees of the Port of Corpus Christi are set to present a donation to the Ready or Not Foundation, part of the Jackie Black Day fundraiser.  This presentation will take place on Friday, August 4th at  3:00 p.m. at the Port of Corpus Christi Adminstration office located at 222 Power Street.

The Ready Or Not Foundation promotes local, national, and international awareness of pediatric brain cancer and raises funds for the research of better treatments and a cure for pediatric brain cancer. The foundation was inspired by Jacqueline “Jackie” Black, a brain cancer survivor.  In January 2006, at the tender age of 6 Jackie was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Soon after doctors discovered it was a high grade (grade 3) anaplastic astrocytoma and the treatments included surgeries, radiation therapy, and extended chemotherapy.  The foundation’s goal is to not only create awareness but to help increase the survival rate of cancer patients.

Throughout the month of July Port employees, family members, and friends of the port displayed their solidarity in the support of the Ready or Not Foundation and its mission by purchasing shirts to commemorate what has officially been labelled as “Jackie Black Day,” named after the organization’s founder.

“The Port of Corpus Christi and community partners are inspired by the courage of Jackie Black and walk beside her as she continues to seek opportunities to help other children battling pediatric brain cancer.” said John LaRue, Executive Director.

Brain tumor is the leading cause of cancer deaths in children under age 19.  This is not a well known fact. There are approximately 120 different types of brain tumors. The Ready or Not Foundation’s main focus is on the high grade malignant brain cancers in children, as these tumors are the most lethal and carry the most significant late term effects for survivors.

The foundation’s goal is to make people more aware that brain cancer takes more children’s lives than any other cancer. While there have been relatively few breakthroughs in the search for better treatments and cure of this deadly disease process, The Ready or Not Foundation seeks to succeed in its fundraising for leading research institutions by raising the awareness of pediatric brain cancer.  Most significantly, the foundation is committed to funding Texas Children’s Cancer Center Glioma Research program.
