Media Advisory: Removal of Subsurface Structures in Inner Harbor

Feb 06, 2018

Corpus Christi, TX, USA – The Port of Corpus Christi is in the process to remove remaining sub-surface structures of the Tule Lake Lift Bridge from the Inner Harbor of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Controlled detonation of explosives to remove the north abutment structure will take place on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 between 9:00 am and 11:00 am.

The Tule Lake Lift Bridge structural towers and center span were demolished in 2007, but the foundation piers, abutments, and fender systems have remained creating a bottle neck for vessel traffic. Removal of the remaining structures will further benefit the flow of commerce to the west end of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and also will allow the channel width to be dredged from 200 to 300 feet.

This is a well-coordinated effort involving the Contractor, Weeks Marine, Inc., and local authorities including the Port Corpus Christi Police Department, US Coast Guard, and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Removal of this structure will require controlled detonation of explosive devices below the water surface. This will be the last of four such detonations for this project over the course of the past six months. The Ship Channel will be closed to vessel traffic for approximately two hours for this operation.
